DJ Maphorisa signalled a renewed interest in Afro music in January 2026, saying that amapiano was in good hands while he explored the sounds that shaped his earlier career.
His career has never followed one rigid genre line. Before the worldwide rise of the Scorpion Kings, he worked across house, gqom, Afro-pop and collaborations that reached audiences well outside South Africa.
The announcement was welcomed by some listeners and questioned by others. Those reactions speak to a larger issue: once audiences closely associate an artist with a genre, do they expect that artist to remain there?
A return to Afro-house need not be framed as an abandonment of amapiano. The two scenes coexist, and crossover production has long been part of South African electronic music. The music itself will ultimately show where this exploration leads.
